Speaking to Variety in a current interview, British actor Robert Pattinson admits to the challenging task ahead of playing the Dark Knight in the much anticipated ‘The Batman’ movie to be directed by Matt Reeves.

Since the Golden Age of comic books when Batman made his first appearance in the pages of Detective Comics #27 in May 1939, the character has grown leaps and bounds and has gained a lot of affection from comic book lovers and film fans alike. Speaking of films, there have been a number of great actors who have donned the cape of the famous masked vigilante (some more distinguished than others) and Rob Pattinson isn’t shy of acknowledging the pressure that comes with playing this beloved character.

He says, “It’s something from the comics which hasn’t been… really explored yet; it’s kind of crazy shoes to fill”; the actor probably alluding to the physicality of playing the character and the expectations from audiences. He also goes on to admit his obsession with Tim Burton’s work in his upbringing. “Batman was… really the only kind of superhero who I really had any… kind of connection with when I was growing up and… I really yeah, from the Tim Burton ones, I mean I was just kind of… obsessed when I was a kid.”

Pattinson, in many ways, is an actor who hasn’t had the most illustrious filmography, so to say, given how ill-received the ‘Twilight’ films turned out to be. However, he has without a doubt been on the ascendancy since then with films such as Good Time which, despite grossing only $4.1 Million in the Box Office, was a hit among both audiences and critics. It’s a film that unexpectedly got him Best Actor nominations in 14 separate award ceremonies held between November 2017 and March 2018. This year, Pattinson has two potentially Oscar-worthy movies in ‘The King’ as well as ‘The ‘Lighthouse’ which he also talks about in the interview. The latter film is set to be released theatrically on 18 October, 2019.

Momentarily, there’s not much tangible information about the  plot, full cast etc. for ‘The Batman’ but there are some bits and pieces that have already been leaked out to or have been reported by online news sites.

As far as the plot is concerned, the The Batman will not be a regular superhero flick with action and science-fiction elements but an original noir-driven story allowing for a character-driven detective narrative. The official release date for The Batman, as of August 2019, is June 25, 2021. A version of the script suitable for filming is also reportedly complete. The movie is expected to be PG-13 rated. Finally, principal photography, according to recent reports, may begin early 2020.

  1. Well he and I share a love for the Burton movies at least 🙂

I think he’s going to make an interesting Batman but I am looking forward to more concrete news and casting about the film. It feels like we’ve been hearing about it for so long!

    1. Hey, hope you are well.
I am looking forward to the final casting choices as well… I hope it won’t be too star-studded though.
I’d like to see some new upcoming talents given an opportunity to make a name for themselves in such an iconic franchise.

  2. I think that I will continue to consider the two Tim Burton’s movies as the best Batman movie adaptations ever for the rest of my life… And I’m tired of all these reboots and remakes!
By the way, and speaking of Pattinson, I’m looking forward to seeing The Lighthouse!
