According to Empire, Beanie Feldstein of the ‘Lady Bird‘ and ‘Booksmart‘ fame is in pole position to play Monica Lewinski in Ryan Murphy‘s new addition to the American Crime Drama anthology. The 3rd season will see the infamous scandal involving Former U.S President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski brought to the limelight once again in an onscreen adaptation set to premiere in the U.S on 27th September, 2020.
The Clinton–Lewinsky scandal , popularly known as ‘Monicagate’ or ‘Lewinskygate’, was a political sex scandal that played out in the late 90’s . It involved then-49-year-old President Bill Clinton and then-22-year-old White House intern in Monica Lewinsky.
Despite the fact that Monica Lewinski herself is a producer in the series, she had her fair share of concerns about the idea of retelling a story that changed her life more than 20 years ago. Nonetheless, her concerns were swept away by Ryan Murphy as she suggests in a statement released to Vanity Fair. She says, “I was hesitant, and truthfully more than a little scared to sign on. But after a lengthy dinner meeting with Ryan, I came to understand even more clearly how dedicated he is to giving a voice to the marginalised in all of his brilliant work. I’m privileged to work with him and the other talented people on the team, and I’m privileged to have this opportunity. […] People have been co-opting and telling my part in this story for decades. In fact, it wasn’t until the past few years that I’ve been able to fully reclaim my narrative; almost 20 years later.”
The upcoming season will be called American Crime Story: Impeachment; the last part being a reference to the short-lived impeachment of President Clinton in the late 90’s on the basis of claims of obstruction of justice and perjury by members of the U.S Congress from both the Democratic and Republican parties. This coming in the wake of Clinton allegedly giving false testimony on the case as well as influencing Lewinsky’s testimony.
It’s safe to say that Ryan Murphy’s new season is poised to get largely positive reactions from audiences given how prominent the scandal was back then as well as the fact that it will be aired in the MeToo era which would make it all the more relevant.
Beanie Feldstein’s role in the upcoming season is set to be her greatest role yet. The 26-year-old actress will be joined by Annaleigh Ashford and Sarah Paulson, who played O.J. prosecutor Marcia Clark on the first season of American Crime Story; a role which she earned multiple awards for. Paulson and Ashford will play Linda Tripp and Paula Jones respectively.
