CAPITAN 3

The much anticipated Captain Marvel movie, the 21st film in the illustrious Marvel Cinematic Universe has recently debuted to US critics and its getting rave reviews so far; a factor that might be a good sign for the film’s forthcoming cinematic run. The film debuts worldwide on 8th march, 2019 .

According to seasoned film critic Scott Menzel of Rotten Tomatoes, he says, “Captain Marvel is everything that I hoped it would be. It feels completely unlike any other Marvel film. A unique and fresh take on an origin story that feels new. Brie Larson is fantastic as Carol Danvers. This is one of my favorite Marvel movies of all time.”. Other critics have equally praised superhero flick for it’s pristine 90’s nostalgia, it’s appropriately comedic tone as well as awesome character performances from Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelson who plays the leader of the Skrulls, Talos.

That said, all is not rosy in this garden as the film has recently been a target for internet trolls on Rotten Tomatoes. The latter have substantially directed their harsh opinions on Brie Larson, who plays the lead role in the film, in light of her comments while accepting a Crystal Award for Excellence at last year’s Crystal and Lucy Awards. The actress openly criticized the lack of diversity among film critics by saying ” I don’t need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work about A Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him. I want to know what it meant to women of color, biracial women, to teen women of color.”

The Movie DB is yet another platform that has seen audiences speak out on the film just around the time critical reactions started streaming in. One in particular linked Brie Larson’s comments on lack of diversity in film criticism to the feminist movement; something that might end up affecting the movie’s performance by alienating certain factions of the M.C.U fan-base particularly from a gender perspective.

Additionally, there are comments on the R.T platform that have been directed on critics with one claiming that they will predictably praise the film largely because Marvel pays them to. Could there be any truth to this comment? Well, just to put this theory into perspective, 75% of the movies released so far by Marvel Studios have had a rating of 80% or more on Rotten Tomatoes, one of if not the leading websites in its space.

Critics and audiences have not always been on the same page when it comes to movies in general and the latest addition to the M.C.U in Captain Marvel will certainly not be an exception. What happens between now and when the film’s cinematic run comes to a close not just from it’s overall reception but also from it’s Box Office performance remains to be seen.

  1. I think the stuff against Brie Larson and the movie is silly. Watch the movie and judge it on its merits not what the actress spouted off a year ago or more.

That being said I don’t know if Disney pays the critics or not but I think some of those rotten tomato scores are equally silly and undeserved and I think if the same movies didn’t have a Marvel logo on them they would not be treated as kindly.

    1. Good points Gemma🖒😎.
Sadly… we don’t live in a perfect world; its filled with people with agendas that might not necessarily be right. I just hope this Brie Larson thing doesn’t stop people from seeing the movie and appreciating it for what it is!
