Speaking during a recent interview with the Collider Quick Youtube Channel, director Joe Russo was tight-lipped about the actual run-time for the upcoming Avengers; Endgame movie nonetheless he did not eliminate the possibility of it being an astounding 3 hour long film. He was speaking alongside his fellow director and brother Anthony Russo as well as the visual effects team for last year’s Box Office blockbuster Avengers; Infinity War.

Despite the fact that 3 hour long movies are hard to come by in the Hollywood space these days, they have not been uncommon by any means over the years. There have been a number of great films that have dared to go that extra-mile i.e 2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Schindler’s List, Seven Samurai, The Green Mile as well as Gone with the Wind, which so happens to be one of the highest grossing films of all time.

One of, if not the most prominent reason why we don’t see much of these kind of films is because a good number film production companies want to milk as much money as they can from the Box Office. For this to come to fruition, they’d have to produce a much shorter but comprehensive cut of a film, say 2 hours on average, so that it can have as many screenings as possible in any particular day during the flick’s cinematic run. This, of course, doesn’t always translate to enormous or desired Box Office numbers if 2017’s Justice League is anything to go by.

Of all the movies in the M.C.U that the Russo brothers have worked on, Avengers; Infinity War is the stand-out in times of length (2hrs 40 min) and it seems like its sequel might as well be much longer by several notches according to Joe Russo.

When asked about the rumoured runtime, he says, ” I think the studio is down with whatever the right story is. Right now the movie is playing well and we have had great responses from test audiences and we are felling good about where it is. We are still doing work to it, we are not done with it. This is a culmination film of 22 movies, it’s a lot of story-telling to work into it and emotion is an intrinsic part for us. When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments for the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate and this one in particular feels like 3 hours worth of real estate.”

  1. I’m fine with three hours. I want the story told right but second for an intermission 🙂 Although who knows if there’d be a good place for one that wouldn’t just grind everything to a halt.
