Maria Hill could be the front runner in the ‘Secretly a Skrull’ M.C.U debate

Played by seasoned actress Cobie Smulders, Mariah Hill is a top-notch secret agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who previously worked in S.H.I.E.L.D alongside Nick Fury to aid the Avengers in quelling certain threats to mankind. The character made her first on-screen appearance in 2012’s Avengers and later went on to feature in other M.C.U films i.e.  Captain America: The Winter SoldierAvengers: Age of Ultron, as well as Avengers: Infinity War.

With the upcoming Captain Marvel movie set in the 90’s that will heavily feature the Skrulls, a famous shape-shifting alien race, there has been bunch of theories online suggesting that some characters in the superhero universe might secretly be disguised as Skrulls; one of them being Maria Hill. That said, why is she such an easy target in this debate? What makes her stand out from the rest? Well, here’s how.

Of all the S.H.I.E.L.D agents in the franchise, Nick Fury has a much closer relationship with Maria Hill and understandably so; it is an aspect that stays true to the comics. This relationship, however, has not been smooth sailing as Smulder’s character confesses in a deleted scene for the first Avengers installment; she defends Fury even though she hadn’t agreed with his ways from the onset.

Assuming she is indeed a Skrull, you could see why she’d be loyal to Fury unconditionally. Maria could be using her close relationship to gather information on the Avengers and other secrets of the fallen organisation. Information that she perhaps periodically and secretly reports to Talos assuming the Skrull boss doesn’t die in the 90’s when the events of the Captain Marvel movie take place.

In Captain America; the Winter Soldier, S.H.E.I.L.D falls apart in the wake of a revelation that there were sleeper agents of Hydra within the agency; sorry for the spoiler in case you haven’t seen the movie by now for some reason. It is a collapse that sees all agents including Sharon Carter as well as Maria Hill relinquish their titles. However, Hill does manage to stay around but this time, it is to work for the Avengers directly.

On one hand, you’d see her continued presence as a way of strengthening her value in the narrative in order to set-up her eventual rise to the top of S.H.I.E.L.D should it be reconstituted. In the comics, Maria has occasionally assumed Fury’s role at the agency. On the other hand, her continued presence might possibly mean that she wants to stay in the loop, keep tabs on what the Avengers are doing so that she can report to Talos, the Skrull leader. Again, this assumption is based on the possibility of her being a Skrull and Talos being alive.

Maria Hill is one of the best if not the best in her line of work; there’s not much to it. She is an elite espionage agent. We don’t get to see much of her true skill set in the M.C.U but when we do, he does her thing with efficiency; case in point Captain America 2 when Hill (dressed as a Hydra agent) manages to rescue Cap and the gang after the epic battle with the Winter Soldier.

Skrulls are just as skilled in the art of espionage because they can easily take out an agent in an organisation like S.H.I.E.L.D and assume their identity for several years. You see where I am going with this? I don’t know about you but I can imagine a situation in Avengers; Endgame where it is revealed that the real Maria Hill was killed long before the Chitauri invasion happened, and the Maria Hill we have have been seeing has been a shape-shifting Skrull this whole time right under our noses.

The views expressed on here might sound outlandish nonetheless Skrulls have been known to masquerade themselves as S.H.I.E.L.D agents in the comics i.e the Secret Invasion storyline. The Russo brothers might tap into the latter and put a major twist into it. Who knows?

She calls Fury, “Nick” twice in the Infinity War post credit scene. No one calls him anything but Fury as we found out in Captain Marvel. She’s a Skrull.
