Unless you have been living under a rock for the past 18 years or so, you’d definitely know how big and influential the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise has been not only to the film fanatics who consistently show up to cinemas worldwide to watch them, but also to the parties that participate in the actual making of the movies. Just to put this into perspective, the latter franchise sits comfortably in 6th position in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Film Franchises of All Time with a staggering worldwide gross of $5,139,434,105. Additionally, it has indeed transformed Vin Diesel from a little known Indie film-maker to one of the most highly recognised and paid action movie stars of our time.
This success can be attributed to a number of factors i.e high octane action, riveting plots and subplots, vibrant and eye-catching locations, relatable characters e.t.c.; aspects which the franchise took to an even higher level as from the 5th installment onward. One would argue that the introduction of Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) into the franchise during that time period helped in boosting its stature. Quite frankly, there might be some truth to this statement, or mightn’t there? Well, there’s only one way to find out and that answer will definitely come in August this year with the release of Hobbs And Shaw which will feature the two characters in their own spin-off.
What should we expect from this spin-off you ask? Well, first off, it’s safe to say that otherworldly action sequences will take centre stage in this. If the showdown between the two characters in The Fate of the Furious film is anything to go by, both Hobbs and Shaw are well skilled in hand-to-hand combat; an atrribute which, of course, needs to be credited to the the experience that Johnson and Statham have in doing such kind of movies. Additionally, if push comes to shove, the two characters know their way around lethal waepons i.e guns which, again, is a testament to the established background that the actors playing them have in action films.
Secondly, we should also expect an unforgettable performance from the one and only Idris Elba. The British actor will be playing the main antagonist in Brixton, an international terrorist leader and a criminal mastermind. Despite the fact that we rarely see Idris Elba in villainous roles, he is an accomplished actor who can pull just about anything from his locker hence giving audiences a performance to remember.
Last but definitely not least, we should expect a set-up scene or plotpoint to tease the forthcoming Fast and Furious movie which according to a public statement from Vin Diesel made this month, will focus on female characters from the film series. It might come at the end of the film like in the 6th installment or it might be part of the movie’s narrative structure.
