Dan Gilroy and Jake Gyllenhaal, who had previously worked together in the 2014 hit film Nightcrawler are at it again with yet another movie in Velvet Buzzsaw, a Netflix production scheduled to have its premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival late this month and a worldwide release on 1st February, 2019. The official trailer for the film was released 2 days ago.
‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ is an upcoming American horror film set in the world of contemporary art in Los Angeles. The plot of the movie basically pivots on the trials and tribulations of art enthusiasts who are haunted by a supernatural force found in distinct and mysterious paintings. It stars an ensemble cast of Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen and John Malkovich.
Despite the fact that a considerable section of audiences haven’t been shy to point out that the trailer for this flick gave too much of the story away, it has been received well by a majority of them as well as critics. The question that lingers, particualrly in the context of this article, is whether ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ will be just as good as ‘Nightcrawler’. Will Dan Gilroy out-do his directorial debut film? Will this upcoming horror film weave a relatable and investing story out of the subject matter of art as ‘Nightcrawler’ did with the subject matter of journalism? Will Jake Gyllenhaal produce an award-winning performance in this as he exceptionally did in ‘Nightcrawler’?
Well, if the trailer is anything to go by, it would be unfair to not commend it especially for its production design. Visuals should be one of the major selling points in the film given it’s subject matter and for the most part, the trailer did deliver on this aspect. Nightcrawler had a number of selling points, the most outstanding one being its theme i.e the symbiotic relationship between unethical journalism and consumer demand. It’s a theme that was explored very well hence contributing to the success of Dilroy’s debut feature film.
Whether or not Velvet Buzzsaw will eventually deliver on other essential aspects e.g horror and suspense which we get glipmses of in the trailer remains to be seen nonetheless, it does seem to have promise.
